The Guide To Howrse Beginners.....
So you just started to play Howrse, and you want to know what you should do to get a good start. Based off of other players, the questions I get, and my own experience, I have developed one- so here it is, put into sections, for you to enjoy. This guide is non-pass buyer friendly, and it doesn't require you to devote yourself to the game all the time- I can't always get on every day but I try to, and I still make progress. This guide won't get you in a top ranking, or as number one in the General Ranking, but should get you on your way at least. If you see something that you don't think is right or have a question about something, feel free to let me know- I do, after all, want this guide to make sense!
Section One: When You First Start....
Before you sign up, you can take a look at my Breeds section to see the rarest coat for a breed- sometime selecting one of those is a good idea. Also, always start with a female- you will see why you want to do this in a minute, but trust me, starting with a filly will help you out in the long run.
When you mouse over the picture of the foal in the second step of registering you can see arrows on either side of the horse. Click them. They allow you to select the horse's background. Most people give their horse a GA coat, and then have to use another Helios' Ray so the background looks right. I made this mistake. Pick a good, well done, background and save your self a pass (or in my case a hard earned BMI.)
When you start Ow will offer you to do the quests. Whatever you do, do the quests. A good many players say that they turned them off and cannot get them back- that is because they cannot be brought back. And you need to do them to accomplish lots of things you normally wouldn't be able to do when you start.
Many players tell you to save the Black Market Items Ow gives you to trade later, for Equus or better BMIs. This will not work. The Quests have changed considerably since they joined, and I try to keep in touch with newer players to keep track on the way the Quests are arranged at all times- right now, you only get 1 of the BMIs put into your inventory, the others are added on the horse already, and the one that isn't you have to add the horse to do the Quests. So just do the Quests like usual.
EXCEPT: in the following places you'll get one-shot chances to improve your chance at the game later- take them! Do all of the below and you will be glad you did later:

- When your filly is 6 months old Ow will ask you to register her in an EC. (Equestrian Center). If there is a single one on that page that offers carrots, PICK IT. You NEED carrots to help out with everything later on and you can't leave an EC till till you run out of contract later- not 3 horse days, 3 real life days. So you need to pick the right one, with carrots if it's in any way possible. MASHES would also be LOVELY for in the future but you don't NEED them. They're just good to have.
- When your filly is old enough to play, Ow has you play with her. Then he has you age her to 1 year and 6 months. When you are aging her, make sure you do this: Dr. Zig's Foal Games. (you need to be logged in to see that). I know, I know, it must seem complicated, but it's not. Just follow the steps for the age of the horse, exactly as the good Dr. Zig listed them, and everything will turn out fine, and you'll gain the maximum 60 skill points you can gain from foal's games.
- When you get to 1 year 6 months, Ow will want you go for a ride. Do yourself a favor, and do a 30 minute trot ride. Then he will (I think) tell you to age her to 2 years 6 months.. Or at least he soon will. So as you age your mare, do 30 minute or 1 hour trot rides daily till you run out of energy. No longer. Oh, and do a lesson too. You will get the most skill gains that way.
- When your filly is 3 years old, you need to pick its specialty. It doesn't really matter which one, as all breeds are good at all specialties. You can go to my breeds section, and see the best comps for the different styles of riding. Pick the best one, and then go under "comps open for all horses" and find the easiest one. Never do one that is higher than 55% difficulty. Check the box on coms for rookies if you haven't won more than 20 yet. If there are.. well, say that the lowest one is 17%, but there are two with 17%. Pick the one of the two with the most kitty. (kitty means prize money). Then if the Kitties are the same, pick the one that uses the least energy. If the energy is the same.... then it becomes an eeni-meanie-miney-moe situation. ;-)
Section Two: After The Quests.....
So you completed the quests, now what? Start breeding. Breeding good horses is one of the steps that will help to optimize your game later. So I will walk you through this process:
So, first of all you started with a female horse if you did this according to the guide so far. You can go into the "public coverings" page and find a horse with following:
2000 GP (Genetic Potential)
100 BLUP (NOT -100, but 100)
At a price of less than 1000e (click the arrow next to the number so it looks for less than 500e, not above 500e)
Then search. Pick the best one (see how to do that here, on the breeding page) and then cover your mare. It will cost anywhere from 100e to 2500e depending on the amount of Equus you have at the time (it goes by percentage).
Your foal should have a GP of over 1000 when born, and about 40-60 excellence stars if you followed the Breeding page's guide correctly.
Just keep this up till you have at least 2 foals and 2 fillies. Then breed them together, (Via a covering "reserved for one of your mares" from the page of a stallion) You can see the best conditions for coverings on the breeding page as well.
If you keep this up (and it will take awhile) you should get some very good horses, and you can breed and sell some of them for money and keep some to help with your ranking.
