About Passes...
Passes are a special currency on the game that can be bought for real world money- they cost $2.00 for 1 pass, 10 passes are $15, 20 passes are $30, 30 passes are $45, and 100 passes are $125.
You use them to buy "special" items, known as Black Market Items, (which are cool bonuses for your horses) and for Secret Market Items, (which are cool bonuses for your Equestrian Center). These are commonly referred to by players as BMIs and SMIs.
There are several ways to get passes, and here I'm going to list them:

There are several ways to get passes, and here I'm going to list them:
- Buy them. (Duh...)
- After your 50th day on Howrse, you can buy 1 pass with 20% of your reserve every 30 days on the game. For instance, if you have 22 979e then your pass would cost 4 596e. Tip: This probably isn't a very good idea unless you don't have a lot of Equus at the moment. Example Reason: having as much money as shown in the example above is expensive, and if you have a BIG reserve like many players it wouldn't be worth it, while if you only had 1 000e in your reserve your pass would only cost 200e. Take that into consideration BEFORE you do this. Thanks to UnionRags123 for this Tip: fodder is bought/sold for 1e; so if you buy a ton of fodder before doing this and sell it back, you get your pass cheap and can sell the fodder off and get all the money back! Thanks Union!
- You can also earn passes by sponsoring players. Basically you put their email into the little box on the home page, and Howrse sends the friend an invitation to the game. Be careful if they don't know your username because it will say.... Well, if your username is "howrseaddicted101" then it will invite them to the game with the header "howrseaddicted101 invites you to Howrse!" and if they don't know the username is you they may think it's spam. Anyway, you get 2000e if the person joins, but what we're talking about here is the pass, as you will get 1 free pass the first time they buy a pass. I think anyway.... (it used to be if they completed the objectives.... remember those? Sigh).
- You can sell a horse for passes. Unless you have a Pegasus Account (a premium subscription that costs.... Big shocker here.... Passes!) or a VIP account (same deal really, but more passes) you can only sell a horse for Equus AND passes, and only in the direct sales. But be careful, if you try this for over 20 passes you could get in trouble and lose karma! Tip: Make sure your horse is worth it! It will need to be something special to sell for passes. A female unicorn, winged unicorns, horses with TONS of BMIs, top GP/skills/stars/whatever, rare breeds, donkeys that haven't been covered, rare RCs, horses with companions, DA horses [diamond apple]... you get the picture.
- If you are good at breeding Unicorns, Skiller Foals, or whatever, you can have a Unicorn/Skiller Service where you breed them for players, and offer them for a pass or something.
- Some Divines (Go here if you don't know about those) can give you passes, or diamonds, which are almost as good.
- Diamonds can be gotten from Gemstone Divines if you own one and can be used in place of passes. Unfortunately Howrse got rid of all the other diamond-getting methods in December of 2013. Correction: I think you can still by them with passes but that's defeating the point, so moving on...
- Thank you to 0gravityspace0 for reminding me of this method: Pass horses! I have no idea why I forgot it, but anyway this is the most common way to get passes free: If a horse is over 30, and mortal, (meaning it has no P. stone) and you send it to heaven, you get a free pass, under the following conditions: The horse must be over 30 years of age, you must not have received more than 10 passes in this way in the last 30 days. You then have a 1 in 3 chance of getting a pass, or a BMI the rest of the time if you have won between 10 and 29 passes/BMIs this way. You cannot win anything else after that if you have won all that. You may age pass horses yourself or you may buy them in the sales. Just be prepared to pay the going Equus "pass price" (which is usually outrageous) for it. Or spend a pass, and I still don't understand why people do that.
- Finally, you can win them. You can enter player's giveaways in their forums, participate in Howrse's promotions, and many other things.
