My Take on the Common Howrse Rants
So there's a lot of common "Howrse rants" that people go on and on about.I thought since a few people (well, perhaps more than a few) seem to value my opinion on random things Howrse related, I would say what I thought.
Now, before you read this, I want you all to know, that I do not want this to change your opinion of me. First off, for me, a difference of opinion never meant anything, I've always been a sort of go-with-the-flow type- you can think whatever you want, believe whatever you want, and say it however you want (well, say it however you want within reason of course) and I honestly will not care. If someone believes the total opposite of everything I'm about to say, that's totally fine. Heck, I would still be best friends with them. I always look at both sides and try to explain both sides, find the logic behind both sides, and then figure out which side is most logical of the two I never base things of random feelings and such- everything I present to people is based of logic. This is probably why I don't feel insulted by people who disagree with me- I see where they get their logic from but none if my feelings caught up in my beliefs are being hurt, because I have no feelings caught up in what I believe. It gives me a very... non-judgmental, non-bias way of looking at everything. Kinda a "cool" demeanor, if you know what I mean.
The thing is, I realize a lot of people don't hold that same "I-don't-hate-you-I-just-think-this-and-you-don't-so-that's-cool" style of debate and understanding that I do. A lot of people change their whole level of respect or friendship because of a difference of opinion. Now, I don't understand that style of thinking, but that's still fine with me- you can work however you want in the thinking department- but I just want those who read this to know that I do not want people to decide they don't like me because they read this. If you know you will probably do that.... well, perhaps you shouldn't read this. I don't want to be seen as harsh, crude, dumb, etc because of my beliefs, but I do hope that we can all accept our differences and agree to be friends. I trust that all you wonderful TBHers out there reading this will agree that it's a free country (well, at lest in the USA where I am it's a free country) and The 1st amendment of the country (The Freedom Of Speech) and all that should be exercised on the web, and even those who don't agree can still appreciate people for who they are.
So let's all remain friends. Kapeesh? ^.^ :)
Okay.... on to my thoughts. Please prepare yourselves. ;)
First of all... the rants directed at the top players....
Well, I think first of all that the top players didn't do anything wrong.
It is often said that... well, I found the following image on a player's page once. It lists several "pet peeves" of the players who think along these lines. This could get pretty offensive from here down so If you are the type to think that of someone disagrees with you they are attacking you personally, then you probably shouldn't read further. ;)

The print is small and blurry, and it took me a little while for me to figure out what it said, so let me copy it:
"To The Top Breeders...
Thank you for hogging all the top horses
Thank you for leaving the rest of us with no chance to get into the top 50
Thank you for selling us nothing but your scraps
Thank you for overbidding us in Negotiations for Divines, Specials, and Elites
Thank you for only reserving the top horses to the other top players
Thank you for making us pay 20 passes for an Elite while only making your friends pay 500 Equus
Thank you for not letting us have a chance to join the GP race
Thank you for turning a Kid's game into an Adult's Only game where kid's don't have a chance against the Pass Buying adults
And Most Of All...
Thank you for making the competitive side of the game impossible for anyone who isn't a Pass Buyer or isn't in your snobby, high society Breeding Groups.
You guys are the best!
Put this on your page if you think Non-Pass Buyers should be given a chance against Pass Buying Elite Players who have just about taken over Howrse!"

Okay, that banner is rather flawed, in my point of view, and I do not condone it in any way. However I would like to start my break down of that player's point of view, and all the others who must have copied the banner, by breaking down the other side of that point of view.
But first of all, being the grammar freak that I am... in the next to last point, the person who made it wrote ..."where kid's don't have a chance...." and it should have been "kids" not "kid's" because kids with an apostrophe S shows possession. The first "kid's" in "Kid's game" is okay because the possession goes back to the game- it's the kid's game. But the second shouldn't have an apostrophe because there is no possession. It should just be plural. "Kids".
Also, all the regular nouns that are capitalized, are not proper nouns and therefor do not need to be capitalized. i.e., "Adults Only game" should be "adults-only game" and "Kid's game" should be "kid's game" etc etc.
I apologize if that seems rude... but I can't help it. I worry about grammar and spelling far too much for my own good... call me a "grammar snob" if you wish, I guess I am one, but I can't help it... sorry. ;)
Okay. With the grammar out of the way...
The point of view this is coming from is not, to me, based on a powerful logic. I see the trail of logic this came from but it's a bit sketchy.
The general idea that the good players, the top players, are evil, goes back to several chains of beliefs, all of which make those who started them look bad. First of all, one reason that the idea that the top players are evil took root is because of simple jealousy- they have what you want. They have elite horses, they have Divines and specials, they have money, they probably have real life funds to buy passes, they have friends in high places, all the mods like them, they have sway in the top breeding groups....
Heck, who doesn't want all of that?
Thing is, that sort of jealousy brings to mind the logic that they somehow shouldn't be aloud to have what you don't because it's "not fair". It also created the illusion that these people are being "mean" to all the payers who do not have what they have and are also being mean by not being mean to players who do have what they have.
A contradiction of your own logic is always a red flag. You say these people are being mean for not giving you what they have and you want. Yet you also say they are mean for giving players who are not you what they have. It cannot be both be ways. You have to choose one. It's a contradicting argument and it will never be able to stand completely on its own as a result.
Of course that one thing is not the entire reason this has failed.
Another thing this comes from is the idea "all men are created equal" taken to an extreme. It is true that all men are created equal, and also true that if a top player obviously considered themselves to better than everyone else, and personally put everyone down, they would deserve whatever they got. But the same is also true of a non-top-player. The same is true of a non-Howrse player. The same is true of any living person.
That is what "all men are created equal" is supposed to mean, in a nutshell. But what you must remember is that "all men are created equal" does NOT mean that no one can have better things than you or that no one can be better at something than you. Also it cannot be somehow twisted into the idea that any top player automatically is evil and arrogant and needs to be taken out. Not only that but isn't one of your desires to be a top player? If so your logic on the top players would automatically make you evil and arrogant. You haven't thought that through all the way... have you?

Now, to go through and address this line by line:
Thank you for hogging all the top horses
Top players do not "hog" all the top horses. The reason top players have top horses is the Howrse rankings work so that you need to have top horses or else you can't be that high in the ranking. So don't be surprised that they have top horses. That's a bit like saying you're surprised a clock has a clock-face- don't be because it has to have it to be a clock. Also, you can have top horses. You have to be willing to work for them though. Don't think that because they are top players their top horses just magically appeared. They started from their foundies with 350.00 GP just like you did when you joined and they've worked their way up from wherever they were to wherever they are. They have as much a right to them as you do. And by hogging them, well, If you mean they have all top horses, well, that's because you wouldn't expect them to have a bunch of trashy horses would you? They probably don't need them and they probably wouldn't help their game. The point is that if you're willing to exercise a lot of selective breeding, time, patience, and a few BMIs here and there (even non-pass buyers can get them), then you can have just as many top horses as they have. You just need to be willing to do the work.
Thank you for leaving the rest of us with no chance to get into the top 50
Oh, trust me, you have a chance. You see, top players are top players because they spend practically their whole lives on Howrse. It depends on how much time you are willing to spend on Howrse. Many top players spend lots on passes. You can also be a top player and not spend a dime; but you need to be willing to work very hard to get pass horses, buy and sell, breed and sell, trade, etc, etc, to get passes for free. You need to do so much work, and the reason you are not in the top 50 is because you aren't doing enough. Simple.
Thank you for selling us nothing but your scraps
Well, let's implement a little analogy here: Let's say you are an established business owner in the lemonade market. Let's also say that you have the best lemonade on the market and have for years and everybody knows it. The reason you have all that is because of the lemons you use. It takes a lot of work, selective growing locations, fertilizers, gardeners, etc to produce these sorts of lemons. It also takes a lot of time and funds to get things just right and produce pure perfection. You have achieved your life-long dream- you are THE top lemonade producer in your country. You have first say in imported lemons and where they come from and how they are grown, all the lemon growing clubs want you to join them, and all the people who are aspiring to be where you are practically worship you. And the entire key to all that is your lemons. Everything you spent your hard earned money, precious time, and devoted your life to- is because of those lemons. If someone else as determined as you came along they could do the same thing- but that is a very unlikely thing. Nobody is willing to go as far you have to achieve their goals. Yet- if you would just give out your lemons, the ones that are keeping you going and keeping your dreams going- if you were sell those off at a low price, anybody could get them and dabble in your place in the market. Because of the hundreds of other things you also do to keep yourself where you are, the chances that someone would overtake your place are not very large- but if so many people occasionally did what you always do, the idea of something fresh and new to the market would take all your business away. You would lose your dreams. Everything you worked so hard for, invested all your blood, sweat, an tears into, your time and money into, would just fall apart. But if you don't give them out- a little under half the people who are aspiring to be where you are will accuse of hogging everything and selling off the stuff that didn't meet the standard that keeps your company going. It doesn't matter that with hard work and patience, they could have what you have without making you give everything up- they could start from nothing. But no; they want you to give them what you have because somehow it isn't fair for you to have more then someone else- even you've earned it and they haven't. So which one are you going to choose? Are you going to just give it all away to someone who hasn't truly earned it yet- or are you going to let them earn it the way it's always been done before, and the way you did it? I don't know about you, but I would choose the latter, and so would most people. Not everyone would I suppose, and if you're one of those who would give it up, that's fine- but most people I think see the logic in the idea that what you have should be earned and complaining that you actually have to work for it doesn't make you look good, and expecting those who already worked for it to just give it to you just because you want it doesn't help either.
Thank you for overbidding us in Negotiations for Divines, Specials, and Elites
Well, I may remind you that the public auctions are public. Anyone can outbid you. They have the funds to do so. The way an auction works is the person with the most money wins. It's a general understanding of how bidding works- the highest bidder takes it and if the highest bidder is a top player so what? And if the highest bidder is not a top player, so what? Does it matter who outbids you? No matter who it is they have just as much a right to the horse as you do. If they want it, they can bid in it, they can win, and there is no law that says that are not aloud to win auctions.
Thank you for only reserving the top horses to the other top players
Most these top players are either good friends, breeding partners, or in breeding groups together. They reserve the horses because that is how they do these things in partnerships or breeding groups on Howrse. Just because they are in a breeding group together does not mean they are evil though. Nor does the fact that they share horses in their breeding groups just like everyone else does.
Thank you for making us pay 20 passes for an Elite while only making your friends pay 500 Equus
You might note that these friends are probably in breeding groups together. And besides did you ever hear of giving a friend a gift just because you're friends? You wouldn't hand your friend a gift and then ask for a hundred bucks would you? Of course not. Nor would you randomly hand expensive, hard earned gifts to people you don't know because they beg you for them.
Thank you for not letting us have a chance to join the GP race
You have a chance. I already touched on that in the first two points but still, you have a chance- it's just if you're willing to do the work or not.
Thank you for turning a Kid's game into an Adult's Only game where kid's don't have a chance against the Pass Buying adults
Since when was Howrse a kids game? Many adults play it. And chrissyh is used to have more on her page than she does now you know. She was number one for a year or more, and she was not an adult. So don't say kids have no chance. It's just that kids need to have the same work ethic as the adults- and that shouldn't be too much to ask.
And Most Of All...
Thank you for making the competitive side of the game impossible for anyone who isn't a Pass Buyer or isn't in your snobby, high society Breeding Groups.
First of all I have said this few hundred times but I'll say it again: You have a chance as a non pass buyer!. Heck, I used to keep myself in a Pegasus account at all times and BMI up my horses left and right and I have never spent a dime on this game! The only question is how much work you are willing to do. Either don't buy passes and don't do the work and get nowhere, buy passes and don't do the work and get nowhere, don't buy passes and so the work and get somewhere, or buy passes and do the work and get somewhere. You have to do the work either way- but know that while there is a little more work involved in the non pass buyer's game, the pass buyer has just as much. Secondly... "high society, snobby breeding groups"? Seriously? I am sorry. But that's a really cheap shot. The top breeding groups are top breeding groups because they let the best in to BE the best. Going back to that lemonade analogy... lets say you are a lemon dealer, and you are mad because that person we were talking about there won't by your lemons. But you are not a top lemon grower. Your standard is not the same as theirs. Can you be upset that these people are not buying your lemons? Of course not! The same goes for if you are not accepted into a top breeding group. The honest truth is that maybe you weren't at the same standard they are.
You guys are the best!
Put this on your page if you think Non-Pass Buyers should be given a chance against Pass Buying Elite Players who have just about taken over Howrse!
Once again, you have a chance, and they haven't taken over Howrse, because out of millions of players only 50 or so are "top".
So there's my thoughts on the the top player rants... as I said before, I hope that those who do not agree can accept me for the person I am and agree to disagree, and we can all still be friends. <3 =]
I am going to, against my better judgment, go ahead and add a comments box to this page. But if they are abused they will be removed. Please remember your manners and don't bully me. We can always agree to disagree and I just want you to know that I am always willing to admit when I am wrong if there is ample proof that says so. ;)
