Skilling....
Skilling is when you take a horse and max out all his skills for winning competitions. He isn't for breeding, he almost always is a male who is gelded so that A.) players that buy him won't breed with him and steal your fire, and B.) Because that gives you a skill bonus. Here are the steps you do when you "skill" a horse:
How do you know you have finished the rides and the lessons? That is explained in the BLUP page.
- You train it fully in its top three skills
- You finish the rides, now including beach rides
- You finish the lessons
- (Optional) Give the horse Poseidon's Pack & Bonus Pack

How do the elite players do it?
There is a system to how the elite players get elite horses ranked so high. It requires a VIP Account (Piece Of Cloud Packs needed!) and PASSES. Lots of them, which is why I am not a player with elite horses- I could be, if I wanted to spend ten hours chained to my computer daily, as that's how you do it without passes, but I do have a life outside of Howrse you know. ;-) If you are really ambitious you might make it by doing this, but it is not guaranteed even if you do it right. Good luck!
Ever wonder why top players "collect" PoCs?
Breeders are using the Pieces of Cloud along with Water of Youth to maximize the amount of lessons a horse can do and thus the amount of skills they can gain. After all the skills from rides, skills training and competitions are maxed out, the only other way to gain further skills is through lessons. After 25 years of age, horses can no longer gain skills from lessons either (even if they are immortal.) So by using PoC and WoY, one can get an additional 80 months worth of lessons gains on the skills. Chronos' Timers are nice but not required.
You'll need to follow as many of these steps as you can, and even then (depending on the foal you started with) you may not actually make it onto the rankings, as the elite breeders tend to reserve the best foals for some time.
1. Start with the highest GP/inborn skills foal you can buy (make sure it was bred with tears)
2. Make sure to put the foal in the best EC you can, with the highest lesson gains (0.099 or 0.1 are ideal)
3. Do proper foal games and get the full 60% skill gain (Dr. Zig has games in her forum)
4. At 2 years old, put on the WoY
5. Do a lesson every single day, without fail! (Make sure the horse’s health & morale stay high always, as these effect the amount of skills it can get).
6. Train the horse fully (Get training help here!). Just make sure you fully complete the training the "proper" way so you get the most skill gain, run in all competitions until you no longer gain skills from them, and put your horse in all rides until it no longer gains from them.
7. Make sure that before the horse turns 25, you start putting Pieces of Cloud on it, ideally 20 Pieces of Cloud (this is the max). A Piece Of Cloud PACK is much better of an idea here since it's cheaper than buying them all alone but you need a Pegasus Account/VIP to get them.
8. Age the horse to 25 years old, making sure to do a lesson every single day, without fail!
Remember that even with following all of these steps, you may still not get on the rankings list, but your horse will certainly be at ‘elite’ skills level. The lessons every day, and the 20 Pieces of Cloud are probably the most important thing to really lift your horse up from being ‘average’.
