How To Calculate Your Horse's Skills Or Genetic Potential:
This question clutters up the Game Play forms every hour or so- "Is there a way to tell how many skills my foal will have?"
So I decided, to save a little room in the Game Play forums I could put it here. ;-)

To calculate the total skills of a horse after it's born:
It is possible to predict, reasonably accurately, the maximum skills your horse can achieve over its lifetime.
Maximum skills = IBS + GP + Lesson gain + Companion gain
IBS
In-born skills – the skills a foal is born with
GP
Genetic Potential – you can find this on your horse’s page under the “Genetic” tab.
LESSON GAIN
This will depend on where your horse is boarded and whether it has Water of Youth. Work out how much your horse will gain in skills for each lesson, by looking at where she is boarded. ECs that pay 60e lessons will give a 0.250 gain in each of the top 2 skills. 59e lessons give 0.249 gain, 58e lessons give 0.248 gain etc. Double that figure to find the total gain per lesson (eg 0.249 x 2 = 0.498 per lesson). Next work out how many lessons your horse will take over its life. For a normal horse, this will be 139 (6 lessons per horse year x 23 years + 1 extra). For a horse with Water of Youth, this will be 277 (12 lessons per horse year x 23 years + 1 extra). Multiply the total skill gain per lesson by the number of lessons your horse will do.
Example.
Horse without WOY in a 59e centre = 139 x (2 x 0.249) = 69.22
Horse with WOY in a 59e centre = 277 x (2 x 0.249) = 137.94
NOTES- This formula assumes that you are not using Pieces of Cloud (POC). If you give your horse POCs, you may be able to gain further skills from lessons.
- Never train your horse when it has low health. If you train your horse when it has less than 100% health, you will not get the full gain possible.
- Never train with less than 100% Morale or you will also lose some gain.
How to calculate the IBS of a horse before it's born:
If the parent's BLUP is 100,
Calculation of Inborn Skills is :
IBS = (GP father + GP mother) X 10%
with a variation of +/- 4%
Example:
GP of father = 351
GP of mother = 350.61
IBS = (351 + 350.61) x 10% = 70.16 points
Minimum : 67.35 points
Maximum : 72.97 points
If you give Aphrodite Tears to mother before breeding, you can increase IBS by 50%
Example:
GP of father = 351
GP of mother = 350.61
IBS = (351 + 350.61) x 10% X 1.5 = 105.24 points
Minimum : 101.03 points
Maximum : 109.46 points
---
The BLUP affects the IBS, so if your horse's BLUP isn't 100 when you breed it.....
BLUP of 90 = 0.9
Then simply multiply that to your horses' GP this will give your the amount of your horses potential that is actually being used to influence the foal.
0.9 x 377 GP = 339
Then continue to use this number instead of the horses original GP (this shows what your horses GP would be if it had 100 BLUP right now).
To recap simplified:
Mare: BLUP of 90, GP 377
Sire: BLUP of 100, GP 416
90 turns to 0.9 x 377
= 339 (new mare GP)
339 + 416 / 10 etc
So, if you aren't confused yet, that's how to calculate IBS & GP. ;-)
